“ViendoMovies,” the Spanish-language film channel that exclusively presents movies originally in this language without commercial interruptions, is owned by SOMOSTV (a company led by Luis Villanueva and part of SOMOS Group). ViendoMovies is known for supporting Hispanic talent with high-profile films that represent the best of Spanish cinema. In April, they are dedicating a film cycle to the renowned Colombian actress Juana Acosta, a widely recognized Latin talent in the contemporary Spanish film industry. The channel will feature the following films on Sundays throughout the month: “Las Consecuencias” (2021), “El Inconveniente” (2020), “Llegaron de Noche” (2022), and “Ola de Crímenes” (2018). All of these productions have received acclaim at various events, reaffirming Juana Acosta’s acting prowess.
Juana Acosta Restrepo was born in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, on November 28, 1976. She currently resides in Spain, where her entire acting career has unfolded. Her mother ran a travel agency, which afforded her frequent travel opportunities. Unfortunately, her father was killed in Colombia when she was 16 years old. Initially studying Fine Arts in Colombia, Juana soon realized her passion for acting and moved to Spain to study interpretation at the Juan Carlos Corazza School in Madrid. She began her acting career in Colombian telenovelas and television films, including titles like “Es mejor ser rico que pobre” (1999), “La dama del pantano” (1999), and “La reina de Queens” (2000). In 2000, she settled in Spain to work as an actress. Juana Acosta has received several awards, including the FIPA d’Or at the Biarritz Film Festival (2015), the Macondo Awards (2016) for Best Leading Actress in the film “Anna,” and nominations for the Platino Awards (2017) for Best Female Performance. She also won the Fotogramas Awards (2017) for Best Leading Actress in “Perfectos Desconocidos”. Juana Acosta’s impressive filmography includes over 30 movies, and she has also acted in numerous short films and television programs.
On Sunday, April 7, ViendoMovies premieres the film ‘Las Consecuencias’ (Spain, 2021), directed by Claudia Pinto. This production participated in the 24th Malaga Film Festival in 2021, where it was nominated for Best Film. Additionally, it won the award for Best Supporting Actress (Maria Romanillos) and the Critics’ Choice Award. ‘Las Consecuencias’ is a story that unfolds during a journey to a small volcanic island, where Fabiola becomes a spy in her own home. She lacks evidence or certainties, but her intuition tells her that not everything is as it seems. Fabiola grapples with fear of what she might discover and the need for answers, questioning how far she should go to protect the people she loves. Following this film is ‘El Inconveniente’ (Spain, 2020) on Sunday, April 14. Directed by Bernabé Rico and also starring Kiti Mánver, the movie tells the story of Sara, who is offered the opportunity to buy the perfect house: spacious, very bright, and extremely affordable. The only small inconvenience? Lola, the octogenarian current owner, will continue living there until she passes away. Nevertheless, Sara believes it’s a good deal and decides to purchase the house and wait. ‘El Inconveniente’ participated in the 35th Goya Awards in 2021, where it received nominations for Best Leading Actress (Kiti Mánver), Best Supporting Actress (Juana Acosta), and recognition for Best New Director (Bernabé Rico). It also took part in the 23rd Malaga Film Festival in 2020, winning the Audience Award and Best Actress (Kiti Mánver).
The Juana Acosta cycle concludes on the last two Sundays with the film ‘Llegaron de Noche’ (Spain, 2022), directed by Imanol Uribe. Scheduled for Sunday, April 21, ‘Llegaron de Noche’ was nominated at the 25th Malaga Film Festival in 2022 for Best Film. The movie tells the true story of Lucía, a witness to the massacre of Jesuits in El Salvador. In the early hours of November 16, 1989, during the Salvadoran civil war, six Jesuit priests, university professors, and two employees were killed at the Central AmericanUniversity José Simeón Cañas (UCA) in San Salvador. While the government blames the FMLN guerrillas, a firsthand witness contradicts the official version: her name is Lucía Barrera, and she works as a cleaning employee at the UCA. Lucía has seen who the real killers are: the military. Finally, on Sunday, April 28, ViendoMovies will present the film ‘Ola de Crímenes’ (Spain, 2018). In this movie, Leyre’s (Maribel Verdú) teenage son, a comfortably divorced homemaker, impulsively kills his father. Leyre goes to greatlengths to conceal the crime, unwittingly unleashing a wave of crimes in the city of Bilbao. Meanwhile, the deceased’s new wife (Paula Echevarría) and her relentless lawyer (Juana Acosta) try to hide the juicy corruption plot they were involved in. Little did they know that the determined Ertzaintza inspectors (Antonio Resines and Raúl Peña) assigned to the case would unravel the mystery.
