VIENDOMOVIES CELEBRATES MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

11-09-2024

ViendoMovies, the pay-TV movie channel owned by SOMOSTV (a company chaired by Luis Villanueva and part of SOMOS Group), which programs the best movies produced in Spanish, 24 hours a day and without commercial breaks, celebrates Mexican Independence Day on Monday, September 16th, a key national date for the largest community in the Hispanic market in the USA. This date commemorates the beginning of the independence movement in 1810. The celebration begins on the night of September 15th with the famous Grito de Dolores, when the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called on the people to take up arms against Spanish rule. During these dates, various festivities are held, including parades, fireworks, music, and cultural events throughout the country. It is a moment of great national pride and unity for Mexicans and their descendants.

On Mexican Independence Day, ViendoMovies programs Mexican films, dedicating its entire day’s programming to contemporary cinema productions from one of the most developed film industries in Spanish-language cinema. The day begins with “El Estudiante” (2009), directed and starring Roberto Girault, with Olivia Núñez and Gastón Pavlovic. This film is followed by “Tiempos Felices” (2014) directed by Luis Javier Henaine with Luis Arrieta, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Humberto Busto, and Iván Arana. The celebration continues with “Corazón de Mezquite” (2019), “El Fantástico Mundo de Juan Orol” (2012), “Los Lobos” (2019), “Siete Años de Matrimonio” (2013), “Finlandia” (2021), and “Los Días más Oscuros de Nosotras” (2017). In prime time, ViendoMovies programs at 9:00 pm (EST) “Ánimo Juventud” (2020), directed by Carlos Armella with Daniela Arce, Rodrigo Cortes, Mario Palmerin, and Paola Arroyo, and winner of the Morelia Festival award for Best Actor. This film is followed by “La Vida en el Silencio” (2022, nominated for the Hola México Festival and the directorial debut of Rodrigo Arnaz), “El Viaje de Keta” (2018 directed by Julio Bekhór and Fernando Sama), and finally “Ocho de Cada Diez” (2018), winner of the Ariel Award for Best Actor (Noé Hernández).

The celebration of Mexican Independence Day is part of the channel’s events in September, which also marks the 18th anniversary of ViendoMovies’ launch and the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. During this month, a cycle of notable actors is also scheduled on Sundays at 9:00 pm. This cycle features “Lina de Lima” (Chile, 2019), starring Magaly Solier; “No Matarás” (Spain, 2020), starring Mario Casas; “Hasta el Fin de Los Tiempos” (Mexico, 2023), starring Bruno Bichir; “La Chica del Alquiler” (Venezuela, 2023), starring Daniela Alvarado; and “La Odisea de Los Giles” (Argentina, 2019), starring Ricardo Darín. Similarly, the channel premieres in September the films “Rafaela” (Dominican Republic, 2021), directed by Francisco Rodríguez and starring Yudith Rodríguez, winner of 8 awards at industry festivals; “La Vida en el Silencio” (Mexico, 2022), directed by Rodrigo Arnaz and starring Juan Manuel Bernal; and “30 Noches con mi Ex” (Argentina, 2022), directed by Adrián Suar and starring Adrián Suar and Pilar Gamboa (winner of the Best Performance Award at the Sur Awards).

ViendoMovies’ film selection and programming strategy is based on offering only productions made for the big screen (theatrical), where the best budgets, most attractive stories, and best talent are concentrated. The channel does not show films made for television or low-budget films (“B movies”), having become a prestigious window, reinforced by its attention to Spanish-language cinema events and talent. The channel’s regular programming includes cycles dedicated to acting talent and celebrating special dates for the Latino community. ViendoMovies is produced entirely in high definition and with closed captions available in English and Spanish, and is distributed by the main cable, satellite, and telecommunications companies in the United States and Puerto Rico.
