Edemol Shine Boomdog & SOMOS Productions Developing Scripted Series

16-10-2018

“Juan Diego: The Story of Guadalupe” Will Tell Story of First Mexican Roman Catholic Saint

Mexico City, Mexico—Endemol Shine Boomdog, a division of Endemol Shine North America, and Somos Productions, are developing the first-ever scripted TV series based on Saint Juan Diego, the first Mexican-born Roman Catholic Saint.

“Juan Diego: The Story of Guadalupe” will be produced by Endemol Shine Boomdog and SOMOS Productions and sold globally by Somos Distribution, a content distribution company part of SOMOS Group. Endemol Shine Boomdog and Somos announced last year the joint development of a TV series based on famed Latin boy band Menudo, “Subete a Mi Moto.”

“We are thrilled to join our friends at Somos and bring the miraculous story of Saint Juan Diego to television,” says Endemol Shine Boomdog CEO Alejandro Rincon. “The Story of Guadalupe is widely known across all of Latin America and throughout the world and our series will showcase Juan Diego’s truly remarkable journey to becoming the first indigenous saint of the Americas.”

Luis Villanueva, CEO de SOMOS Group, SOMOS Productions and SOMOS Distribution declared, “We are very excited about our involvement in the production of a story that is so loved by all Spanish speaking peoples and people of faith and SOMOS Distribution has the proven experience, recognition and strengths to manage the placement of the series worldwide. San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin is the base for the devotion for The Virgin of Guadalupe and the best way to honor our roots and traditions. For us is a responsibility to show this part of our heritage and as we do with all our products, we guarantee that this series will make all of us proud and will be enjoyed by audiences worldwide.”

Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known as Juan Diego (1474–1548), was a native of Mexico and the first Roman Catholic indigenous saint from the Americas. Juan Diego was said to have been granted an apparition of the Virgin Mary on four separate occasions in 1531 at the hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City.

The Basilica of Guadalupe, located at the foot of the hill of Tepeyac, claims to possess Juan Diego's mantle, on which an image of the Virgin is said to have appeared by a miracle as a pledge of the authenticity of the apparitions.

These apparitions and the imparting of the miraculous image, together known as the Guadalupe Event, are the basis of the veneration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is ubiquitous in Mexico, prevalent throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas, and increasingly widespread beyond.

As a result, the Basilica of Guadalupe is now one of the world's major centers of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics, receiving more than 22 million visitors annually. Juan Diego was beatified in 1990 and canonized in 2002.

Endemol Shine Boomdog was formed last year when Endemol Shine North America merged its Spanish language division Endemol Shine Latino with Mexico City-based production company Boomdog. The newly combined studio, which has offices and production facilities in Mexico City, Miami and Los Angeles, is focused on developing and producing scripted and unscripted content for the U.S. Hispanic and Mexican TV markets.

Endemol Shine Boomdog now produces many of the top series in the region, including “MasterChef Mexico” (TV Azteca), “Mira Quién Baila” (Univision), “Chumel con Chumel Torres” (HBO), “Se Busca Comediante” (Comedy Central), as well as, “MasterChef Latino” (Telemundo) and the highly anticipated drama series “Nicky Jam: El Ganador” (Telemundo/Netflix). Endemol Shine Boomdog also recently produced scripted hit “El Vato” for both Netflix and Universo and is developing dramas “To Selena with Love,” “El Clan” and “Subete a Mi Moto.”

SOMOS Productions is a recognized production company with experience in telenovelas, live shows, series, formats and other television genres. It has produced telenovelas such as “11-11, En Mi cuadra Nada Cuadra” and “Vicky RPM” (Nickelodeon); “Todos Somos Heroes”, “Premios Billboard de la Musica Mexicana” and “Latin American Music Awards” (Telemundo) and the highly successful biopic “Hasta que te Conoci” (the life of the singer Juan Gabriel). It also participates with Endemol Shine Boomdog in the production of “Subete a Mi Moto”
